Lvl 5, Dlvl4, Human Barbarian, Killed by a water demon

So I see this water demon off in the distance and I'm like, "Whoa, time to get out of here and head back up a level." I've got a big head start so it should be no problem. Then I hit a teleport trap that puts it between me and the stairs. The demon just pounded on me with a morning star.
